Ministry Update

In February, 3:18 Ministries hosted a short-term ministry team from Olathe Christian Church in Olathe, Kansas. The team from Olathe Christian Church built a new storage shed at the San Carlos Tribal Youth Home. The old metal storage shed, which housed important records and supplies, was leaking water and the front doors would not close correctly. The Youth Home is a Tribal run group foster home and emergency shelter. For just minimum wage, the staff of the Youth Home cares for these precious children who are in a difficult situation. When funds run short, the staff will use their personal finances to purchase the necessary supplies.

Tory and Kara’s first short-term mission trip to San Carlos was in 2001. They spent their week serving at this very same Youth Home. Relationships have been formed and strengthened over these past 14 years. In 2015, 3:18 Ministries is focusing on serving the Youth Home through service projects. We are hoping to remodel several of the bathrooms which are in rough shape, build a new playground, and build another needed storage shed. These projects will take extra funds. Would you prayerfully consider a special gift to help 3:18 Ministries serve the staff and children at the Youth Home? Donations can be sent to 3:18 Ministries’ post office box. The team from Olathe Christian Church also helped us host an Afterschool Bible Club in Moonbase. The children are remembering the lessons from day to day. God’s Word is being planted in their hearts. We are so grateful for our short-term ministry teams!

Ministry Thoughts from Tory

Nine years ago I had several people question why I was coaching two basketball teams of Apache boys and girls. I was asked on a couple of occasions if coaching was “really ministry.” It was long hours. I had to drive  thirty minutes from my house to San Carlos to help pick up our players. Then it was a forty five minute drive to Miami for the games. After the games it was back to San Carlos to drop all the players off. Sometimes I wouldn’t get home until after midnight. But in those precious minutes of travel time, we had amazing conversations. In those great times of coaching, talking and laughing (a lot of laughing!), friendships were born.

Three and a half years ago we had three young men start working construction with us. It is a long God-filled story, but one of those young men, Shane, was on the boys’ basketball team. Over the past three years Shane has experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. He has witnessed the birth of this second daughter. He has battled addiction. He has been at death’s doorstep and had a close family member commit suicide. Through it all Robert and I were privileged to walk alongside Shane and his family.

Last month Shane asked Robert to talk. Shane admitted he needed help to overcome his addictions. He was finally ready to surrender his life to Christ. At the lowest point of Shane’s life, God was there waiting for him. Robert baptized Shane at Talkalai Lake on November 12th. It was a wonderful day as Shane’s older daughter and the other guys who work   construction with us witnessed him surrendering to God. Shane told us last week he has not touched alcohol since and has no desire to drink.

We are committed to walking alongside our Apache brothers and sisters and leading them to Christ! I am thankful I serve a God who can place His servants at the right place at the right time to accomplish His plan.

Ministry Update

This fall/winter we hosted short-term ministry teams from Chandler Christian Church in Chandler, Arizona; and First Baptist Church in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The team from Chandler Christian Church painted three bathrooms at the San Carlos Tribal Youth Home. This is the same Youth Home where we have been hosting weekly ministry times for about eight years. The bathrooms are in rough shape. We are hoping to remodel a couple of the bathrooms next year. The team also held an Afterschool Bible Club in Moonbase. The kids at Moonbase and the youth group from Chandler had a great time.

The team from First Baptist Church helped us host a Christmas Family Fun Day in partnership with the San Carlos Tribal Social Services. The event was held on the front lawn of Social Services in the middle of downtown. There were many fun activities for the children and parents to do. There were crafts, sugar  cookies to decorate, a reindeer ring toss game, books for the children to pick out, and pictures with Santa just to name a few. Kara and Liz’s Parenting Class students received Parenting Class hours for being there. A great partnership has been formed with Social Services through these Family Fun Days.

July & August Ministry Update

In July and August we hosted short-term ministry teams from St. Joseph the Worker Church in Portland, OR; Phillipsburg Christian Church in Phillipsburg, MO; and Knott Avenue Christian Church in Anaheim, CA.

The team from St. Joseph the Worker Church was able to finish the storage shed another ministry team started in June. In addition to that outside project, the team also put up an interior wall dividing a larger room into two bedrooms and finished painting the interior of a house of an elderly friend of ours.

The team from Phillipsburg Christian Church was able to help us sort a truck-load of donations we received. We distributed the donated items to several families so they could have a yard sale - providing income for some struggling families and providing reasonably priced items for other families. They also painted the interior of another elderly lady’s house.

The team from Knott Avenue Christian Church came for a long weekend. They painted over the graffiti-filled basketball court in Moonbase. They also hosted a Family Fun Day at the newly painted basketball court.

We have been focusing our children’s ministry time at Moonbase. Our ministry teams help us host a Bible Club in Moonbase. It has really been a blessing to get to know that group of children. Many of the neighborhood kids came over to help with the painting. God is moving in Moonbase.

May & June Update

May and June were exciting months! We completed the home for Robert and Edwina. It was so much fun to walk them through their new home and point out all the features. When we walked into the bedroom Robert looked up, got tears in his eyes, and said, “I’ve never had a house with a ceiling fan before.” We were elated to point out the ceiling fan in the living room as well! Robert looked around their new home and said, “I feel like a millionaire!” We would like to say “Thank You!” to everyone who participated in providing them their home. In June we hosted a short-term ministry team from Red Bridge Church of Christ in Kansas City,  Missouri. This was the second trip for this church and the fourth trip for the lead pastor.  During the mornings they worked on building a shed for our dear friend Veronica who lost her husband in January. They also painted the interior of Rose’s house. We met Rose thirteen years ago when we first visited the Tribal Youth Home. Rose retired several years ago because of her health. She had asked several Tribal departments for assistance painting, but received no help. We were honored to be able to serve her in this way.

The team also hosted a Bible Club in Moonbase. They shared lessons from the life of Joseph. It was so encouraging to hear the children repeat the previous stories and correctly answer questions. They were engaged in the stories and actively participated. God is moving in a powerful way in the hearts of those children!

Tory's Thoughts on the Fourth of July

I have just been thinking about the 4th of July. I am so thankful for this country in which I was born and yet I had no say in that. I didn't choose this country or the color of my skin. I didn't ask to be born in this land of opportunity and influence. I guess I just got lucky, lucky to be born in a country people are literally dying trying to get into. As you celebrate America's freedom remember those words our parents told us and if you are a parent you have uttered, "With greater privilege comes greater responsibility." How are you using your opportunities and influence? God bless the USA.
